Abstract

The act of welas asih or mercy is a necessity to create peace and harmony within Indonesia's multiculturalism. This article attempts to develop the concept of welas asih aiming to forgive the unforgivable which often occurred during the multicultural conflict as well as enhancing intercultural competence. The article overviews the face negotiation approaches in intercultural dialogue as a non-formal learning environment. The dialogue covers cultural conflict resolution in Indonesia, with a goal of intercultural competencies and building a better intercultural friendship. The research uses qualitative method and literature review analysis of related articles such as ethnicity conflict, face negotiation and forgiving. The result of this study shows that communication’s facework strategies in face negotiation are the best predictors in developing the act of welas asih. Total forgiveness after transgression is well accepted for establishing a better friendship-relationship. This discourse shows that the usage of face negotiation is essential in creating harmony, understanding cultural difference and eliminating prejudice within college students’ friendships

Abstract

Abstract

In the current era of globalism penetration, many local communities face challenge especially in the existence of their local knowledge and wisdom. The younger generation began to move away from various locality systems as a result of the intervention of industrialism, modern education and global information exposure. Therefore, an effort to generate local knowledge around the lives of young people is needed so that their lives are not uprooted from the roots of cultural history and local wealth which is actually still very much needed in facing life's challenges. This article is the result of a research conducted on the community of Banyutowo Village, Dukuhseti Subdistrict, Pati Regency in an effort to develop local potential and knowledge through a community school for fishermen's children. The purpose of this article is to explain how maritime knowledge can be developed in fishermen's children through film designed by the children themselves. The study uses qualitative methods with a participatory approach and action research. The results of the study show that using camera to make films about maritime localities in the village directly involving the children provides space for them to know, feel, and reflect themselves in the maritime knowledge of their village communities.

Abstract

Democracy requires active public political participation. Sustainability of general elections is vitally important in democracy. As a developing country, Indonesia is still struggling to implement its democracy. Interesting phenomena in Indonesian democracy, the number of women who run their candidacy in an election is still limited. For instance, in West Java Province Regional Election, there are no women candidates for governor or vice governor. The political sociology perspective sees these phenomena as the patriarchal culture that the community prefers male leader to women. This research aims at understanding causes of why there are no female candidates in the general election in West Java. This research makes use of quantitative approach with survey method aimed to explain political views of West Java society about female candidates in a gubernatorial election. The area of the research covers West Java province, involving 500 respondents. The data was collected by using the questionnaire distributed by Google Form to people living in this area. The data were then analyzed by inferential statistics. This study indicates that West Java residents still hold strong ideology on gender differences, believing that a good leader should be male. Even in the smallest scope of institution, men is suppossed be a leader. In addition, there is a dichotomy between the public and the personal space for male and female duty. Women are suggested to stay at the private space, while male has a duty at the public sphere. It is also evidenced in the research that women voters have little tendency to elect the female candidates. This occurs not just because of their patriarchal cultural background, but also due to their education. It is indicated that even female voters had higher education, their tendency to elect the women candidate was still low.

This tradition supported by the belief that the sea has a spirit that needs to be maintained so that the sea can provide a life for the community. Abstract

This article will examine the efforts of a group of middle-class urban Muslims in cultivating the piety. It will trace the working logic of the formation of pious subject, as a point of departure to comprehend the increasing of religious zeal of the middle-class urban Moslem. By exploration on the activity of the employee and leaders of a number of companies in the Santri Eksekutif program, we argue that the effort to be a pious subject is often related to and interplay with the aspirations of Islamization of public institutions and with neoliberal ethics. Furthermore, we argue that more than a quest for identity, religious expressions that are public are a form of requirement to be ethical and pious subjet. Through this article we aim to (1) describe a form of ethical and pious subject, (2) explore the formation process of the ethical and pious subject, and (3) accentuate the interplay and complex relationship between the process of cultivating piety, aspirations of Islamization of public institutions, and with neoliberal ethics. This article is based on ethnographic fieldwork in Jakarta and Bogor.

Increasing natural degradation has started affecting society particularly women. Conversation links between women and nature is ended up with the fact that women who are mostly suffering from any natural degradations. Natural degradation will lead women to poverty as they have no choices and opportunities to move to satisfactory condition of wealth. In very limited means and infrastructure owned, women take any responsibilities fulfilling family and society needs. In order to avoid possible family shortage, women living in the fishing village work harvesting water hyacinth, an invasive aquatic plant which has negative impact on ecosystem, and gain economic benefits from processing water hyacinth, whilst developing many other domestic strategies for family survival.

Some teachings that should not be carried out are prohibitions of slander, greed, irritability, accusation without proof, jealousy, being bad towards others, accusing, stealing, picking or taking something that is still integrated with the main part, finding other people's things. The teaching that must be done is understanding the property itself, being honest, obeying the teachings, and getting along well. Globally, the wisdom value of the Samin community can create world peace.
